If we meet horse riders out on lanes etc we always cut the engines as my can is a little bit louder so can spook the horses.
Every single horse rider I've ever come across while out riding has been friendly and appreciative of us stopping and giving them a wide berth.

Now walkers and ramblers, that's another story...

As an ex horse owner and I ride on country roads I have a fair understanding of horses and riding around them.
Firstly, let's get this straight, I have never ridden a horse along a public road. I consider it far too dangerous for both horse and rider.
I always slow down and keep a good eye on the horse for twitching, I coast past before opening the throttle again as horses can be very nervous of motorcycles and noise.
Progress is the key word here, main public roads are no place for a horse in this day and age. Horses can be trailered to forests for brilliant rides, most are open to horses. Off the road it is far safer for horse and rider. Cars and motorcycles travel around the national speed limit and coming round a corner to find two horses, riding abreast has got to be close on suicide for the riders, not to mention carnage for the horses.
Agree, consideration for other road users (even horse riders and cyclists with no insurance or road tax) but I'm afraid I disagree with horses on the road. At least cyclists have control of their vehicle.

P.S.
Sorry, to answer the question, yes, of course we should slow down, I always do, and the situation depicted, police will pick on any circumstance to make a situation look worse than it really is, perhaps fortifies their case for higher fine or possible ban? 104mph? Possible ban (I was at 105mph) but 104mph past a horse? Yessss, result! Hang him high! Just my warped opinion.

Winston Churchill got rid of road tax in 1937, horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians have more right to use the roads than motorists.
Yes of course we should slow down for horses or any other vulnerable road users, how much self importance do you need to consider your own time more important than someone else's safety?

LMFAO...... :woohoo:

I slow down for horses. However I will say that I think if the horse does a big dump in the road, the horse riders should be made to get off and clean it up otherwise you are putting motorcyclists at risk!!!!

There are numerous horse Studs around where I live and up by the Ridgeway there are Gallops EVERYWHERE. But there are still loads that use the main roads all around here, I see them everytime I'm out virtually.

I think you should slow down for horses but i also think they shouldnt be allowed on roads where theres a national speed limit in place or be able to ride two abreast. They should also pick up there sh1te.

A bit in return from them wouldn't go amiss. Dirty sods. You have to pick up after your dogs or you get a fine in most urban areas, should be the same for horses on the road if you ask me. I know it might be a bit annoy to have to stop, but so what? I've never seen a horse travelling any faster than a trot on the road anyway, most of the time it's walking pace only. A quick scoop into the undergrowth should do, I don't suggest taking it home! You'd need a sack.
You mean you don't take it home for your roses?

I'm not bugeeing a sack of poo to my bike. :P

Personaly, I don't think we should slow down or give them a wide berth.
If the horse isnt 100% road safe they shouldnt be on it. I rode horses untill my mid 20's, mostly retired race horses, so I'm not saying this with any prejudise. When they show consideration for other road users by cleaning up their crap then fair enough (I have to admit, I never did)

Having said this, I do actually give them a wide berth, but only out of self preservation, as you would any out of control vehicle, as a lot of riders hardly seem in control.

Also in my experience as a rider of both horse and bike, generaly, horse riders are the most arogant selfish people you will ever meet. Never mind government ministers thinking we are nothing but plebs, you should meet some of these t**ts.

I had an encounter with one yesterday in my van, as his horse was backing into the middle of the road, apparently it was my fault, and I should drive on the wrong side to avoud him. I had to remind him if his horse kicked my vehicle it was his fault and not mine, like I said T**T
