Tips for Long Distance Touring

Post by Alun »

I thought I'd start a thread on long distance touring tips. What I mean here are non bike related things you can do to stay more alert and ride longer distances in comfort and safety. Here's a couple of ideas to get you going.....

Ear Plugs
Do not underestimate the tiring effect of the constant battering of wind noise over the course of a long day. Ear plugs will take the edge off that and still leave you aware of the all important noises such as the engine and emergency vehicles etc.

Hydration
Over the years I've been on countless expeditions to remote and mountainous regions of the world. I've led expeditions up high altitude peaks and spent weeks (alone) in some of the harshest wildernesses in the world. Experience has taught me that the single most important item for keeping energy levels and alertness where you want them is staying hydrated.

A 10% loss of body fluid reduces performance disproportionately, though you may not realise it when it's happening. The answer is simple, use a Camelbak (or equivalent) water bladder and drink (sip) small amounts regularly. The golden rule is drink before you feel thirsty. And if you don't like wearing one when riding then get a tank bag and store it in there. I guarantee your staying power will increase if you stay hydrated.
