ABR 85 - Brecon and Beyond route

Post by billy-abr »

G'day folks

Here's the route for the Brecon Beacons and Beyond route in ABR issue 85.

It's a fun, varied route that you can do on a winter's day - as always with Wales, heavy clouds adds to the atmosphere.

There's a few green lanes included on this: the classic Roman Road from Trecastle to Llandovery which can be difficult this time of year: there's some big puddles and ruts, so you'll need to be comfortable with water crossings. There's also a steep rocky descent at the end which can be slippery, so I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. Cracking lane, though. If you want to skip it, just continue ahead and take a left soon to re-join the route.

The other is through Crychan Forest, there's no surprises with this one, fairly straightforward gravel and stone surface, but it can get a bit greasy. Just remember that this is a logging area, so if there's any gates closed, obviously don't go through them, and keep an eye out for horse riders as well. Again, this can be skipped by continuing on the road towards Llanwrtyd Wells

Other than that, you've got superb twisting country lanes pretty much the whole way. The roads are quiet and aren't particularly frequented by farm vehicles so they don't get too muddy. And there's fantastic views throughout.

Enjoy
