It wasn't so very long ago, but this feels like it comes from an entirely different (non-Trump) era:

Phew...! It's over the line at last. There's finally room for a little bit of optimism in the world. Not much, but a bit.

A little bit of decency, of normalcy, of sanity.

Ardern re-elected in NZ. Biden in the US. Trump gone.

There's a very long way to go. We still have rogue regimes in Brazil, Turkey, Philippines, Russia, even closer to home Hungary and Poland; and a travesty of democracy in Australia and the UK. That's without entering into the remaining dictatorships littered all over the world, war-torn Syria & Yemen, and the revolting monarchies of the Saudi peninsular.

Biden won't be the answer. He's far too old, even though he's massively more decent a person than Trump - obviously. I doubt if he will achieve anything more than some repair work after the damage that's been done. Maybe there's some hope for a Kamala Harris presidency in 4 years time? But at least we will be able to expect the behaviour of a mature adult, even when he makes mistakes, rather than constant pandering to the delinquency of a deeply flawed personality totally unsuited to high level government. Hopefully black americans will be able to breath without the fear that their own president could encourage the KKK and other fascists to murder them with a tweet. Perhaps scientists and seekers after truth will be able to trust that the leader of the most powerful country on earth understands and accepts the need to act on climate change, even if the chance to reverse it has largely been squandered. And maybe the world will be able to expect again something resembling a rules-based world order which doesn't support chaos for its own sake.

So no high expectations, but maybe a bit like someone applying a make-shift plaster after 4 years of someone else continually rubbing salt into a festering wound.

So pleased that's mostly settled.
I see he's off playing golf, what a douche.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.
