Work Case #15 - Montesa Honda Trials Bike

Post by Thedktor »

Previous #14 Honda 125 Scooter

If you don't know Montesa they are Spanish, and known mainly for their trials bikes though they had a wider range of small two-stroke road and enduro bikes during their peak in the 50's through to early 80's.

In 1985 Honda effectivley bought out the dwindling company and Montesa is considered to be the Spanish subsidiary of Honda. In 1994 the last Montesa-designed engine was dropped and the Honda 250 2-st trials known as the "Montesa 315" was built for some years until the current 4RT came in 2005.

The 4RT uses a physically tiny 250 4-st engine and quite a technological marvel it is that has been tweaked and weight reduced ever since, the latest bike is apparently 73kg dry....

My interest in this company is from my first bike, a Montesa Cota 247 trials, and I have a 349 in many pieces in the garage for when I get some time....

Back to this new machine and its very light of course, fuel-injected but starts surprisingly easy on the kicker, and over 5 grand for a bike with no seat!

We sold a few though, and a couple were converted to the "trail" version 4Ride, with a high enduro style seat. A super-lightweight trail bike:

I have had 315’s and been in the 4RT since 2005 when they were first introduced - had 4

Now on a Repsol 250 version

Fancy a go on the new 301RR which is as close Bou’s works World Championship machine as a mere mortal could get

4RT is a Honda bike and the Montesa bit, is sentimental

Good bikes but they take a bit of riding in muddy conditions as they seem to spin out, whereas with a 2 stroke you can have an easier time

4Ride is a good trail bike for snotty and rocky UK lanes

Only pain is an oil & filter change which involves stripping the generator cover off to access the internal paper oil filter canister

I like Jap trials bikes

Here’s my other oddball

Nice bikes, well built and quite expensive now.
I had a 2007 4rt for many years,but it's just road riding now.
Never as spritely as my sherco 290s but loads of engine braking and a fuel gauge would have been handy as no warning ,no transparent tank and no reserve it just stops.

Interesting stuff, good to see some trials bikes.

A few years back I had the predecessor to yours Johnnyboxer, a TY250 "pinkie". Brilliant bike with a slow revving old-school air cooled motor with modern linkage suspension.

This one had been "un-pinked".
