I need to create a small business website for a small engineering company which will be offering services and a small web shop.
Can anyone recommend the best path i should take ?
And if you have first hand experience can advise companies i should look at and ballpark costs.
Thanks in advanced for all information offered.
Regards
Dave

You could try someone like Heart Internet https://www.heartinternet.uk (who I use for my email and web hosting and are UK based).
They also have website tools and help available. I'm sure they'd be able to get you started.

WordPress.
That is all you need to know. WordPress powers a crazy amount of the internet and with very little reading you will be able to set up, manage and run your own page.
www.ukreg.com will get you your domain name.
Hosts are cheap - I use hawkhost
WordPress is free, there are thousands of themes so there will be one that suits your needs. You may have to pay for some themes, but it will be so much cheaper than having a designer set up your site.

Oh and don’t think that WordPress is just a bloggers site - you would simply opt for static pages rather than blog pages.

Just as a way of a quick search :
https://www.responsivemiracle.com/best- ... ss-themes/
It is as difficult as a word document to get things running.

I'm a graphic and web designer and I would agree with TomBoyNI: WordPress is the way to go.
I use them for my own websites as I can't be bothered doing something in the evening that I spend all day doing!
You can buy your domain and hosting through them - I think I paid around £80 all in: domain registration, hosting and a very simple page editing tool. You can even have a mail redirect set up so that you can use your domain, such as [email protected].
I recently started a new site... I've yet to put anything meaningful on there but I just wanted to get something set up for a future endeavour: justrtw.com

OB1,
I so love your Honda 250 Rally, it looks the business, it's a motorcycle I don't know too well. Awesome tool.

Thanks! I've been riding for over 35 and I've had over 60 bikes but, for some reason, I just enjoy the CRF... I must be getting old!
