Re: 2012 ktm 990 adventure
My advice....(I have ridden a 701)...don't do it.
TBH the 701 is about the same as the bike you sold me, performance wise...just heavier, more complicated and with more expensive parts. Take the 'skin' off and it looks more like a road bike than a dirt bike.
whereas the 950/990...there will never be another bike quite like it. The new Yam is probably the nearest thing to it.
Just my opinion, mind.

I don’t think that’s true. The 701 is a fully capable off road bike. When it runs..
You can do long motorway drags enjoy the twisties on it true. Because they are a lot of fun off road as well.
But you can do single tracks, I’ve kept up with smaller bikes on enduro days. It’s awesome fun and a very good bike.

Re: 2012 ktm 990 adventure
I had a 690 for 4 years until someone kindly stole it. As you know the 701 is pretty much the same but in a white frock.
I took the 690 everywhere I would take an EXC, even the nastiest of lanes in Devon. Yes it was heavier than an EXC and a bit wider, but once I took that into consideration it was a brilliant all-rounder. On my normal terrain of Thetford forest it was exceptional. The only thing I didn’t like doing on it was deep ruts, but then I don’t like deep ruts on any bike.
I could also use it to commute 25 miles to work, I would not do that on an EXC.
Out of the box the fuelling was poor and it stalled a lot on the trails. An aftermarket pipe and re-map fixed that.
It was 100% reliable although I do hear for some they can be trouble.
I’ve not ridden a 990 so I can’t compare it to that and I guess it does depend what you want it for?

Daft comment.Take the 'skin' off and it looks more like a road bike than a dirt bike.
As for ability the 701 is far more capable off road than a 950/990 unless your idea of a trail is 8 foot wide hardpack in which case you might as well ride a road tourer
