Alpine passes

Post by mechanic »

Hi all, leaving for a trip this Thursday, heading to Austria to ride as many Alpine roads as possible! Not been before. Wondering if salt or grit is used on these roads at high altitude to dress the road surface? Such as on the Grossglockner etc etc. If so I’ll dose the bike up with ACF50 before I leave! Anyone know couldn't get an answer when I Goggled it. Also any other tips/ advice from those that have been there and done that. Cheers Nige.

If it's the case they salt the passes it won't be an issue for you as they will be closed. Grosslockner is just a rip off, £26 euros, paid it the other week, that's a couple times now, won't be doing it again.

Go to the Dolomites, loads of passes and free, well except the one up from lake Misurina, 20 euros for 3 miles up and back again, again, second time I've done it, won't be doing it again but if it were my first time I would.

Some like the Grossglockner and Timmlesjoch, are pay to enjoy, most aren't.

The two main Austrian ones as said above are the rest aren't other than here I said above, if you go to Switzerland you'll find the best passes on the best surfaces in Europe however, you will pay dearly in other ways.

Interesting stuff! But does anyone who has ridden there know the answer to the Salt on the road Question?
