Tyres

For my CB500X, I'm considering Conti Trail Attack 2 or Michelin Pilot Road 4 as a 90 /10 road/trail bias; to be used primarily on road ( gnarly, potholed, grass in the middle , loose chippings, unclassified roads- typical Welsh back roads) with the occasional foray into forest fire-break roads , dry trails and dirt roads.

Any opinions on my shortlist?

I have the conti trail attack 2s on my 990 adv impressive grip in all conditions .There very confidence inspiring they wear well as well you know the type of roads me and the old man ride but I will be swopping for tkc70 next but wouldn't hesitate to have these again

I had a CB500x last year and fitted them with PR4s. They are fantastic road tyres and transformed the bike with great performance on the road in the dry and wet. Cornering was fantastic and created a very good road bike.

However even on short gravel sections I didn’t feel very confident of any off road ability of the PR4. And I’m not sure the type of roads you are describing would match the PR4s too.

PR4/5 is one of the best tyres I have used, however, for what you describe then a TKC would be of more use.

You could look at TKC80s. Good manners on the road. Too knobbly?

Look at it's younger sibling, the TCK70.

I've used both and am happy with either.

I bought some Avon trail riders for my CCM SM wheels (mainly because that was all that was available in the right size). They are excellent. You won't want to actually trail ride on them, but wet / dry road fantastic & as long as it's not a mud fest, they will get you anywhere you fancy

Picture is the K60 fitted to a KTM 690, get more miles than the starship Enterprise.
I fitted Bridgestone A41s on the 990 for a trip ragging around some German twisties, classed as a 90/10 tyre, wouldn't do more than gravel off road, but loved the feed back and grip from them.
A great road tyre that is grippy and will do most off road look no further than the K60, top seller for a reason.

I've just fitted a Mitas Terra Force R to the back of my wifes 750 AT and she likes it more than the previous Anakee 3. I'll be trying them on my bike soon too.
All of the tyres you've mentioned are fine on anything stone based, tar, gravel etc, once in mud or wet grass they all quickly reach their limit, in other words perfect for 99.9999999% of the time.

How does it do off road? French trail type going.
I'm looking into tyres that'll do a 2.5 - 3k mile trip to spain and back but still give reasonable grip in a variety of conditions. My main concern is getting stuck on a muddy hill because the tyre can't clear itself.

If your running the 140 or lower, they have no centre band, the M+S Silca variant have bigger clearing channels and obviously better wet grip, I've run them through alsorts hook up well did a 2k trail on the 990 with them on, there's better fronts tbf, but I like matching pairs.
