Route advice required - San Sebastián to Calais

Post by Scott_rider »

It looks like we might end up riding home from Northern Spain due to the Brittany Ferries boat issue  .

If so, we need a route from San Sebastián up through France to Calais. We’ve got 3.5 days to do it, so 3 overnight stops before Calais.

We want to stay off the motorways and avoid coming up the West coast through Bordeaux/Le Mans etc. as we’ve done that route before...

Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks guys 8-)

Over the Pyrenees (Eastern side) and hug the Mediterranean as far as Marseilles and head up the Route Napoleon to Grenoble perhaps?
Maybe taking in Millau or the Gorges du Vercors via a bit of a detour; aiming to get to Calais via Reims , or up the middle via Bergerac? The world's your oyster in France . Enjoy whichever way you opt for!

Head towards The Ardennes in Belgium and spend a couple of days there ? We passed through there last year and thought it would be a nice area to spend a bit more time in. Pretty handy to Calais as well.

San Sebastian to Andorra along the N260 (stunning road along the Pyrenees) approx 500km, Andorra up to Sainte Enimie France which is at the end of the Gorge du Tarn (another stunning road) approx 400km, Sainte Enimie to Troyes approx 540km then Troyes to Calais approx 400km. The distances are using no tolls or motorways, long days in the saddle tho.

Good luck and safe riding.

I concur. Great route idea. I was on the N260 Sunday past.
