We’re back in the camp kitchen this morning, Weet-Bix with nice cold milk for breakfast.
It’s been a while since we’ve slept in the tent and it’s strange that it sometimes feels like home. It’s the place we’ve slept most, albeit in different places if that makes sense? But it’s our stuff....we were woken this morning by kids bouncing a ball and the rumble of V8 muscle cars starting up and driving to the hose pipe for a wash down. There’s a classic car show along the beach a bit later.
So, Hicks Bay.....well worth a drive to if you ever find yourself in this area and want space and quiet. We only stayed the one night and then headed to Gisborne. A cabin on a campsite, a cabin with en-suite again. It was tiny but the bikes could be parked outside and it had a comfortable bed.
Add a powerful shower to a shower curtain that is both to short and not wide enough....flood!!
From Gisborne we rode to here, Ohope Beach. The route took us through a beautiful gorge which would have been even better had it not rained. I’m kit complaining about the weather as we’ve seen to have done well following the weather forecasts and avoiding the worst of it. Well, Sarah has, that seems to be one of her jobs.
Today is Saturday the 13th of April. We’ve got a bit of a plan for the next few days that will hopefully see us just south of Auckland on the 21st. I may have said already but our time in New Zealand is drawing to a close.
The bikes are booked in for flight preparations on the 23rd. We need to give them a clean and sort out the stuff that can’t fly with them. Things with batteries, laptop, jump pack etc.
But we’re not there yet, there are still a few hundred miles to ride, more bends to carve and definitely more tea to drink.
Two happy people, two happy bikes.

The bikes got serviced a few weeks back when we got back to the North Island at Moto Mart in Lower Hutt.
There were no reported problems and we opted for valve clearance check, new plugs and new brake fluid.
My 800 is just about at 107,000 now and Sarah’s bike is a little over 24,000.
Fingers crossed that all four of us get in to the US and manage the 10,000 miles or so that we think we may do.

Now there’s a question. We did buy a Sony of some sort or another. A small one, less than £300. We’ve used it two or three times.....the majority of the photos are taken with my iPhone. A 6s I think.
A few hundred quid spent unnecessarily perhaps?

When we were at Ohope Beach there was a classic car show on. It wasn’t put on just for our benefit but we enjoyed a few Saturday hours looking at American V8 Muscle, lots of highly polished Aussie/Kiwi stuff, a few small in comparison European cars and a good good amount of restored classic caravans.
Add in a beer or two, a (very nasty) corn dog, blue skies and sunshine and there you have it.....a day out.
Monday morning and everything was packed in to the Panniers once again. Off we went to a B&B at Waihi Beach. I may have said that we were done with B&B’s in NZ but we decided to give it another go. Mainly because there wasn’t much available with really good reviews and the tent was going to stay in the Pannier for a couple of days.
It was a bit of a gem and lived up to the reviews left by previous stayers. I don’t think that stayers is a word but you get my drift.
The owners left us alone except when bringing the superb breakfast. Perfect.
Our rides have been getting shorter as we get closer to the end of our time here. The roads have still been lovely to ride though and it’s not like we haven’t ridden much...!
Waihi Beach turned in to Hot Water Beach, the B&B turned in to the tent. Another 3 night camping.
Hot Water Beach is what is says. Hot Water seeps up through the sand due to the geothermal activity. You can go and dig a hole, let it fill with hit water and sit in it. It sound idyllic until you get there and find a couple of hundred other hot water seekers all huddled in little dugouts.......bloody tourism.....!!
Still, at least our Top10 Campsite membership card meant that the shovel hire was free, not the usual $10.
Today is Good Friday and just 45 miles from Hot Water Beach is Shelley Beach, very close to Coromandel Town. Another campsite tonight, but no tent. A pod type cabin is home for a night.
Although the ride was short today is was certainly sweet. Lots of corners, lots of elevation changes and lots of stunning scenery. We even found some nice fish and seafood for lunch.....and an ice cream. Winner!
Tomorrow has 100 miles planned to East Tamaki near Auckland. We then have a couple of days for cleaning the bikes and our stuff before dropping them off at a Honda dealer for fuel purging and certification for acceptance to be airfreighted.
