Mefo Super Explorer supplier? Alternative?

Post by JediMaster »

It's not my day for tyres...

Having tried to order a Michelin T63 for the DRZ, only to learn they've been discontinued, I went to order a Mefo Super Explorer for my 990 only to learn that Gabe at Zen Overland has no stock and is no longer importing them.

Does anybody know of an alternative supplier?

Cheers.

The tyre I was referring to replacing (T63 thread) in Irkutsk was an EO-7. It was the hardest wearing tyre ever.

I bought another when I returned home. It weighted a ton (6.5kg 120-18) and was a bas**** to fit!

I find the 990 tyres are easier to fit than the DRZ. Might try an EO-7 if I have no Super Explorer joy!

Cheers!

You're right. The 140 looks to be the same pattern but the 150 has a centre ridgeline.

Who's tried the 140 on a 990?

Worryingly, it denotes the tyre as 'not for highway service'

I've never had a problem getting mine through MoT, because while it's not E marked it is speed rated and doesn't have NHS on the sidewall.

If they've started putting NHS on the sidewall, that would explain why people aren't stocking them any more.

Shame, as I rate them as a good compromise given the weight & power of the KTM 9X0

That's what put me off initially, though I have decided to take a gamble and see what turns up.

Making a tyre of this size and design NHS would be a curious decision.

UPDATE

After placing an order with Pneus-Online, I eventually received a reply to my email inquiring as to whether the NHS information was correct.
Their reply contained the following...

"We would like to confirm that the tyre is indeed marked NHS and can be used only off-road or for racing purposes."

A day later the tyre arrived and sure enough it is stamped DOT, just like the one currently fitted to my bike.
