I test-rode a 700 (or possibly a 750 ) X a couple of years ago, and over the 90 minutes or so decided I didn't like it much, mainly because of the low rev limit, and it seemed too tame after the Transalp. I bought instead a 650 VStrom, which is great.
Roll on to last week ...... the VStrom went in for service, and I had a courtesy bike, an NC750S, for 24 hours. Initially I kept hitting the rev limiter, but after a short while I got me head around that and short-shifted to use the torque - suddenly the concept made sense. I was almost sad taking it back ..... but the VStrom soon brought me to my senses
So, don't dismiss it - have a longish test ride. Yes, it's an old man's bike, but I'm an old man. It's comfortable, well-made, quick enough once used as it's meant to be used, and excellent on fuel.
