Trailer Trial.

Post by sprintster »

I'm just home after giving my trailer a proper test. 600 miles this weekend along NW Scotland. Leaving on Saturday riding solo for 15 miles to pick up my girlfriend I thought I'd made a big mistake as anything over 55mph had the trailer starting to weave. Once she was on the back though it handled great. I won't be hitching it on for a Sunday blast but at sensible touring speeds I can't fault it. Strong winds on Saturday on the way up to Durness were no problem either.

Another great day on Sunday with a run down to Applecross Campsite via Gairloch and Torridon.I think I may have surprised a guy on an adventure bike along the coast road to Applecross when I was keeping up with him through the twisties. :)

The final challenge for the trailer today was the infamous Bealach na Ba. No problem, just a very wet ride home through Glen Shiel and up Loch Ness until it dried up just after Inverness and back home to sunny Aberdeenshire. Over all a great weekend and I'm really impressed with the trailer. Any slight depreciation in the handling of the bike is more than made up with the luxury of carrying whatever gear you like. 👍

"anything over 55mph had the trailer starting to weave".

Experiment with how you load the trailer. I had a weave on one of my early rides, which i think was caused by having too little nose weight in the trailer - packing a bit more up front in the trailer seemed to eliminate it. Adding ballast to the pillion seat is an alternative strategy.

Like you, I found the effect on handling minimal, and more than outweighed by the improved camping experience - a tent I can stand up in to get dressed, a comfortable bed, a chair etc etc

I think its great engineering, but don't understand why you just wouldn't go up in a car. :?:

Why do you ride a bike? You're still riding a bike, just with more luggage carrying ability.

Sledgegreen, it was only when I was riding solo that it started to weave. Once my girlfriend was on the bike that sorted it. I wouldn't bother with the trailer if I was going away myself but for two people camping in comfort it's great.
