Nordkapp, should I?

Post by dubber68 » Sun Apr 01, 2018 6:20 pm

Well I have found myself with a 24 day window in June and I am thinking about heading to the North cape. I assume the trip is possible in the window I have without riding long days as I have ridden similar distances in the past, but are they any other morsels of advice those who have done a similar trip offer. Also any must do places on the way? I will be riding up from Calais and plan to ride the Norwegian coast either on the outward or return leg.

Are the mozzies at that time of year as bad as I imagine them to be?

Any accommodation/ferry advice would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance

24 days will take you up and back , I have been 3 times ,and rate it as a top riding destination , used campsites on those trips
IF the weather is good the Lofoten isles are an absolute must as the scenery is truly breathtaking.

On the 3 trips so far I have done , mozzies were an issue on only one evening camped beside a " reedy" lake and have not been a problem on the other days . ( going back up this summer with some buds) . The shops in the towns still close on Sunday's , but not the fuel stations .

24 days? - yes easy. Heff of this parish myself & two others rode from Northern Ireland to the Arctic Circle in Norway a few years ago. We did the return trip in 12 days, so 24 days to Nordkapp should be no problem. We did it in September so we would not have had the long daylight hours that you will have.
Campsites a plenty. We ended up staying (mostly) in the huts (sleeping 4) - worked out cheaper than 4 tent pitches. All you will need if you avail of these is a sleeping bag.
Sounds like it will be a great trip - enjoy.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I have a feeling this will be a great trip if a little more expensive than heading south off of the ferry. I was a bit worried about the daylight thing but I thought September, when I have another time slot, would have been too cold. Is that not the case?

Not when we did it. The weather was kind to us - but i do remember a truck going along the roadside just above the arctic circle putting in the poles to mark out the road boundry in snow, so they must have been expecting it soon. Because of the shorter daylight hours we also disciplined ourselves to get on the road early each morning to get the miles in.

Find a hytte if the weather is a bit wet ( it will be on some days) and wild camp on the rest of the trip; it is free and legal .

Buy a ' Staatoil'mug the first time you fill up for free refills after that ( for the coffee not the petrol)
Why Nord Kapp? Why not go further North and camp at Sletness?

No reason to stop at Nordkapp. Time permitting I will head further North. I really do plan day to day when travelling.

I was a bit under-whelmed with Nordkapp, but it was freezing cold, foggy and heading for midnight (but still light) when we got there. You can blag a slight discount at the gate (manned 24 hours) by telling them youre not interested in watching the film show.

I got more satisfaction from getting to Grense Jacobselv and the end of the 886, following the Russian border to the Arctic Ocean.

I thought only Svalbard was further North, after 400 miles of sea and with no roads.

Where is Sletness ?
