France has made CE Gloves compulsory

Post by Richard Simpson Mark II »

From the trade mag British Dealer News

Late last year, it became obligatory in France for riders and pillion passengers on any motorcycle or scooter to wear CE-approved gloves. Failure to do so now results in an on-the-spot fine – and possible penalty points.

Relevant labelling will mention the standard EN:13594 and a CE mark shows that the gloves have been independently tested to be compliant with the PPE Directive 89/686/EEC. The original version of this EN standard was first published in 2002 and had a scope limited to professional use. However, a 2015 revision removed this restriction and it now applies to both professional and non-professional riders.

This law came in last year. With regard to the CE approval, I think this is only a recommendation and you would think that you could only buy CE approved gloves in bike shops, which is not the case. But then 2 pin sockets outlets are outlawed here but still readily available.
My son was not allowed to take his bike test because his gloves were not CE approved - that was five tears ago.

Sounds a bit like Microsoft verification, you are required to pay a registered body to test the item to "prove" they are worthy of certification.Hence why you tend not to get Windows 10 drivers for old equipment .So in a similar vien older designed gloves may not be sent in for approval

I think you can buy CE approved gloves in farm shops, builders merchants, garden centres etc at modest prices.
I recall a case some years ago when someone who had sustained a hand injury wearing some big-name glove with armour etc costing ££££ wrote to the importers and asked what the intended protective qualities of the glove were and how they were tested.
The importers replied that they were a fashion item and no protective qualities were intended or implied.
You can get gloves tested against impact, abrasion etc for a tenth of the price of motorcycle-styled fashion items.

We had a 3 week holiday on the bike not long ago and about 2 weeks of it was spent in France (mostly south). The poilce ride round in t-shirt and no gloves, I doubt it very much that you would ever get stopped. We rode a fair bit without any gloves and were never stopped anyway

There seem to be loads of laws in France, where the biggest crime is getting caught.
I'm told the French plod refused to enforce the breath-test one because French citizens were retaliating by demanding that the plod blow into the bag, knowing that if it was after lunch they'd be absolutely hammered along with the rest of the population!
