Last year we rode the trail from Sotres and then took the left fork by the big rock and down to Espinama only to find we couldn't get a cable car ticket to the top of Fuente De. This year I see there is a trail up past the Hotel Aliva which takes you to the top cable car station but not sure if it is legal to ride or what sort of condition it is, can anybody give information on this???
cheers, Tony

Open your eyes and you see what is in front of you, open your mind and you see a bigger picture but open your heart and you see a whole new World.

We had no trouble last year 2 up on the GS but thought I was probably pushing my luck trying for the cable car station this year. I might take a ride up to the Hotel and see how dodgy it looks from there  .

1996 was the year & when the Picos trails were unrestricted and open to all
Sadly in just 20 short years it has become mostly verboten and out of bounds to vehicle users
Sad sign of the times

So, yes, the Sotres trail is always open as it's a 'national' right of way but all of the other trails are totally out of bounds.
The rules state that only people who live in Cantabria can apply for licences to run off road tours, which is Ok up to a point but a few years ago I tried to get permission for a charity gig to raise money for cancer research - just three guys on 'classic' bikes - and was refused. So zero points for Cantabria as far as I'm concerned ... Shame on them!

There's a hotel and some holiday cottages up at the back of Fuente De that you can access by Road - I was up there last year in a 4x4 with the family. So there must be access rights to them, which no doubt a charming adventurer could use to blag their way. Well worth it, a beautiful drive and view.
