We live in such a wealthy country, but while there are people who are homeless, living on the poverty line, people going to food banks, people who cant afford to heat their homes etc then fundamentally as a society and as a human race we have failed. There is clearly an issue with the distribution of money.
I don’t earn anywhere near 80k, but if taxes need to be higher to help those off the bottom of the ladder in this society then fine by me.

I don't know... i always felt responsible for getting myself off the bottom ladder... (& I have most definitely been there)
Perhaps we should vote Communist, and everyone earn thesame amount, have identical apartments and fibreglass cars, and all work together on a big farm...

I've just come back from my voluntary job, a couple of hours a week working in the East Bristol foodbank warehouse. I don't see many people working in there that earn 80k but they're probably too busy earning that 80k ;)

Of course a lot has to do where you live. Most people in my part of the world are on minimum wage or not much above. A skilled man is on much less here than in the mainland. 80 grand is a massive income around my Manor.

I have been watching this post for a while and refrained from comment until now . All I would say is there seems to be a lack of recognition of the word 'earn' and that people who earn £80k and above, have earned it and will pay the proportionate amount of tax for it, and have done for many many years. The option of course is to leave the UK for a tax haven and that is what will likely hapoen for tne even higher 'earners' ! :pinch:

Great posts Philiptigerrice
I too took responsibility for getting myself off the bottom of the ladder, that started by getting on the bottom of the ladder with my first full time job.... picking lettuce, £3.50 an hour.

When you start a business from scratch, you are very conscious of being on the bottom of the ladder. Hard work and hours well in excess of the average worked by your employees actually makes your hourly rate look pretty abysmal, Phillipgerriice is bang on, thats how it was and still is for me !!

In the USA if you do well, its celebrated - here we have to hide it and be ashamed of it.

It just seems wrong to me - that the more you put in - and the more you get out - the more we hate you, and the more we want to pull you down :(
Very well put Philip, and excellent precis of the case! (thumbs)

Aye, it's usually the case for the self-employed and those growing a business.

I have been fortunate in being allowed to farm since I was about 16. We are financially comfortable (no where near £80k pa!!) and I'm now approaching 60 yo, but there have been a LOT of long days and short nights over the years and two financial jumps into the deep which allowed the business to expand and grow. Even now though, our rate/hr is pretty poor, like was said elsewhere, assets tied up in a business are not there to spend, at least not yet!
