Carrying bikes in a van.

I've been carrying enduro type bikes in my van for years (often up to 3 at a time) by strapping them to the inside of the walls and being offroaders you don't need to be too precious about them. Now I'm looking to put my Wife's MT07 (170kg) alongside my Morini Scrambler (200kg) in the van and don't want them to start banging together whilst driving along.

I've tried strapping them to the van walls but eventually they either start moving around or the straps start rubbing on paint etc and have looked at the front wheel chock systems but to be honest they look a bit flimsy and can imagine the bikes toppling over ....... so what is the most secure way of doing this?

I had our bikes in front wheel chocks, each had a strap going over the headstock pulling the front down into the chock. Then I put a strap around the outer pillion footrest to pull the back down. Travelled from Warwick to Catalunya like that, no problems.

I use Bumpstop wheel chocks bolted to the floor. They are very well made and do the job. I also use them in containers to the US on everything from DRZ's throught to GS's and Wings and never had one move yet.

My buddy also uses them now in his van for his 2 BMW S1000RR Superstock bikes which are worth a small fortune.

I'm really interested in the replies to this thread as am planning to drive two of my bikes (fireblade and a harley) down to Spain in August, strapped to either side of the inside of a luton hire van (using ratchet straps)

Don't know if anyone else has done it this way ?

Strap the bars down on each side with a fork saver fitted, for added security strap over the rear wheel, therefore there is no suspension under load during transit.
Most make the mistake of over tightening, the straps just need to be firm (thumbs)

I took my xt660 all the way to Phils in France just put the side stand down and two ratchet straps on to the frame just above the footrest , one pulling down towards the front of the van and the other one pulling against it towards the rear , never moved an inch on the way down or on the way back (thumbs)

Don't bother trying to tie bikes down as it has suspension Doh

Tie the bikes from the handlebar on each side (towards the top clamp)
One forward and the other back on each side
Four tiedowns in total for each bike
Add something to the van bulkhead if you want or a wheel clamp
Never used a wheel clamp myself though!
Hundreds of thousands of miles done
No bike scratches
No fork seal issues
