As much as I love reading all these posts about proper adventure here is the original post.

As such I've spotted these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-R1150GS-A ... Swxp9W6ZtJ

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-R-1150-GS ... Swo4pYJIr9

This might be a stupid newbie question but why do people have leather tank covers?

Seriously, this year I've noticed that I've enjoyed camping backroad and mile munching trips so I'm thinking of getting a big BMW GS as I've always wanted a boxer and I like sitting up tall. There are loads of different types on the market from the 1150 onwards but which one is best? Comfort and reliability are my top two needs. I'll hunt around for one with all the bells and whistles.

Cheers

Bren
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Not yet. I'm not going to rush in, also work is keeping me busy, I've got until spring to find a good one.

Asia and Africa? Honda or Yamaha,,,with the Yamaha AG200 its the one where you will always get spares. In the Congo its the bike of choice for the Police! A 1200 GS may be nice but can you pick it up again after you fall off (and you will)? However I did read about a guy doing the Dalton whose 1200GS broke, and BMW Global Support sent out a truck to bring him back to Fairbanks. Awesome. Only the Germans...
Everyone now has twigged to the benefits of minimalist Adv riding. Slower yes, less carrying capacity, but much less stress. You can buy a new Ag200 or a used XT for the price of a GS1200 rear diff.

Mmmm, cousins 1150GS he had to check and top up the oil every day on our summer trip, never touched my KTM the whole week, yes it did use a little bit of oil but only a very tiny amount in over 1000 miles, so I think your repeating general internet hearsay. :P
I'll admit the seats on KTM's can take some getting used too though

My KTM 1050 is far better than the 950 was though, seats comfy and it's not used a drop of oil in 2.5k miles so that's progress for you.

1150GSA unless it starts raining money in my garden, colour either silver or black but its not that important.
