I regularly go over to France either on the bike or in our motorhome. I usually, but not always, enter and depart via Dunkerque. Cant say Ive seen any trouble yet. We have seen a few shifty looking folk walking along the roads though. The good lady Bill sometimes asks "what do we do if they try to get into the van"? I usually tell her to let them in and make them a cup of tea because as soon as you get to the port the van is searched anyway. Whether I would actually let them on board would depend on the given situation and how quickly I could get to the hammer behind my seat. :unsure:

Lets just have a look at that. If we look at EU migrants they are entitle to benefits, just as we would be in another EU country (we can actually now refuse to pay unemployed migrants from the EU for the first 4 years anyway)

In terms of Non-EU, lets have a look at the facts below from end of 2014. This btw is from the telegraph, traditionally a right wing paper. As you can see, by FAR the biggest issue in the UK is the number of families claiming "tax credits" for which the earning threshold is frankly, fucking ridiculous. Also child benefits remain a big issue. No matter how many kids you want to have you get benefits per child? why cant we cap it at 1 child? 2 maximum? why should we pay people to breed? (thats effectively what is happening)

Life's way too short for me to worry about what benefits other people are claiming. My daughter stopped work when she had her second child and is doing an OU degree and claiming benefits rather than return to full time work but given the amount of tax my wife and I pay into this country I don't care.

It does seem odd to me that you can be on benefits and want to improve your chances of getting a job by doing an OU degree course and you get charged for doing it so you end up with more debt. This country is a fucking mess and if I was young free and single again I'd be out of here.

...................but we could detain them until they are deported to their country of origin, wherever that may be in the world. That will become a deterrent as well.

When I was a cop, one of the problems we had with illegal immigrants was identifying where many of them had come from. Many of them destroy their passports or give them to others to hold on to. They do this so when they or their premises are searched and no passport is found, they can then be very vague as to where they come from. We cannot obtain new passports from their embassy as they require proof of birth/origin before they will issue one. Issuing a travel document (like a stateless persons passport) is no use as we still cannot send them 'home' as we cannot 100% state where they come from regardless of what we know or believe.

Getting many countries to 'take back' their citizens can be very difficult. China for example refused to accept that anyone would want to leave China so the subject in question cannot possibly be Chinese !!!

The only real solution is to incarcerate them indefinitely (if we could afford it - which we can't) but that then vicitimises real, genuine refugees. Having said that, international asylum rules dictate that asylum seekers should declare asylum in the first safe country they arrive in.

It's a mess with no real solution.

Once article 50 is invoked (which may be sooner than we first thought if the 1972 committee are ignored) Sangatte will move to Dover, Calais will be a staging post with the French helping all those immigrants to board any vessel just to move the 'British' problem to Britain, and who could blame them ?? You vote for Brexit, this is what you get ! :whistle:
