Portugal touring

Post by Shovelhandz »

In July I'm ferrying to Santander/Bilbao and then heading for the algarve to meet the wife and kids.
I'm going to try really hard not to go near a motorway, my plan at the moment is to ride through the Picos, montesinho natural parque,Douro valley and then parque natural da Serra da estrella.
How I then continue to the algarve I'm unsure at the moment.
If anyone can impart any knowledge or wisdom or must go routes I'd be really grateful.
I'm considering my return journey to be back up the coast through Lisbon and Porto.
Look forward to hearing from you
Cheers

The N103 either side of Chaves (especially the west side) is a great ride (thumbs)

Heading south .... All of the above. Then from Manteigas consider heading south on the N roads towards Evora. The ibis is on the centre of town with garage parking FOC. Evora is worthy of wandering around the old town with resturants on the town square near the church. Then ride down through the centre of Portugal on the N2/N124 roads Aljustrel, Ameixial, Sao Bras do portel, faro.
Then on the road north, ride down the coast to Sagres, then up the coast on the N268/N120, inland on this route will take you through some decent twisties and up to >800m then the N261 to Comporta, then take the ferry over to Setubal. You should then be able to then skirt Lisboa either by motorway (vasco de Gama bridge) of riding NE along the eastern shore of the Rio Tagus. I'd stay away from the "golden gate" bridge unless you really need to be there.
