Re: Scotland With My Son
Thanks for the comments guys.
New helmet now bought :woohoo:
The KLV is now off the road for a while. Since I bought it 2 and a half years ago, it's done 3 trips to Scotland and 1 trip to Europe and it's never faltered, it's been a star. However, it's now time for some maintenance.
It's going to get new braided lines on the brakes, (probably) new pads front and back (haven't checked them yet, but must be renewal time), got to get new tyres (this trip really squared the rear off due to all the weight, and the front now has very little tread left on it), and I'm toying with front and rear master cylinder rebuild kits, and maybe caliper overhaul with new piston seals etc. However, I'm skint after this trip and saving for the family summer holiday from now so it'll probably be late summer before all this is done. Still have the 990 Superduke for hooning around on tho
Cheers,
Andy

Impressive the first time you do it but in my opinion it's actually a sh#t road.Stop, wait for a campervan coming down, take a hairpin, stop wait for another campervan and if you're like me when you get to the summit 3 boy racers will try and put you in the ditch. Then you get to an overly busy, over priced pub at the end. :pinch:-Ralph- wrote:Two up and fully loaded last time I did it, you just need to slip your clutch a lot, keep your motor spinning, and go for it.chain driven wrote:Your trip looks as if you and your son had a ball , next time include Skye then up the coast , just back myself from a 4 day trip wall to wall sunshine all day

Can can look daunting, but its OK if you get on it and keep moving. Lots of people go round the final few bends at snails pace with thier feet down, but it just needs the confidence to wait until nothings coming the other way, take a wide line, tip it round, and go for it.
The way down the other side resulted in a very hot rear brake mind you.

You aren't likely to need new piston seals unless the caliper is weeping brake fluid past the current seal.
I posted on here about changing mine a while back, everyone told me not to bother and when I pulled apart the 10 year old calipers the seals were still looking perfect. I just gave everything a clean up, rubbed red rubber grease around the outside of the piston, and pushed them back in, brakes are performing bob on.

Can't fault the view though, or the challenge, I like it.

Sounds like you really enjoyed it and the lad will remember it forever and im sure he'll tell his kids all about it in the future.Ive done quite a bit of the roads you did myself,i camped up at a place called Clachtoll a few years ago which is near Drumbeg,i used the little shop in Drumbeg to stock up on beer and crisps for my nights camping, the roads were the slow steady away type but my god it's beautiful.I think ive seen your KLV as well,i work in Birtley and i used to pass through Ouston on my commute, once or twice i spotted a KLV sitting outside a residence just as you are leaving Ouston at the top of the hill, don't wanna give too much away for obvious reasons lol.
