Transalp travels south to Andorra for some RB2 fun.

Post by Glenn_G »

The idea was to take the Eurotunnel across to France to save time over a ferry, then avoiding Paris and the toll roads go via nice back roads south to see the Millau Bridge, then drop into Carcassonne on route to Andorra. Then head east from Andorra La Vela do the RB2 vibraction road book across north east Spain Ripoll, Olot, Figueres etc finishing up in Collioure France, with a little pitstop dropping into surprise an old school friend who lives in Roses Spain. Then blat back home north by the end of the following week. It worked out like that, just about B)

Due to poor planning this trip turned out to be a solo trip, but at least it gave me the opportunity to keep a little diary as I went and so will try and recall it here, it may even help me remember it in future, my memory is not the best ;) :

Friday 11th September afternoon saw me travelling down to Folkestone to get the 8pm Eurotunnel train across to Calais, whilst onboard I had a quick chat with some guys having a weekend riding around Nord Pas de Calais. I also realised I was a little nervous doing this trip on my own down to Andorra, though by the time I'd adjusted my chain it was time to unload.

Faffed about at the first fuel stop I came across and finally got a pump to work (a few others picked seperate pumps that also did not work) and after loading up a scenic road route with Millau Bridge destination, hit the road about 10:30pm. An hour or so later had to pull over and put on waterproof layers as too cold. Not sure I had much of a plan that night and so kept riding until I was too cold or tired to continue and would then think about where to stay. Early Saturday morning a little after 2am having travelled east via Bethune & Cambrai and heading south past Oise I was about done in and spotted campsite signs at Laon so followed them, only to find the campsite gates closed. Too tired to carry on I parked up in the carpark next door, took off my lid and gloves and laid down on the floor for a rest. Big road gloves make an okay pillow when you're knackered

Saturday morning came in what felt like next to no time (4 /12 hours sleep), I was being woken by a dog licking my face, out on his early morning walk with his owner. Considering the lack of kip I did not feel too bad, so tried to stay awake and put the kettle on for some porridge and a cuppa. Now in daylight I could see I was parked under a large oak tree next to Camping La Chênaie with nice views of a little fishing lake. A little while later whilst sat enjoying the tea/scenery a cop car drove into the car park did a little circuit and then slowly left - I guess checking out the vagrant sleeping rough  , tipped off maybe by the dog walker.

Upload them to a website like photobucket. Then just copy and past the URL into the box as you type your message.

(or send me your pics and I can do it for you, depending how many you have!! haha)

Excellent start, reminds me of my first trip to France before pay at pump supermarkets, Ride as far as you can til reserve then sleep in a forecourt next to the bike til it opens.
The secret of a long life is knowing when its time to go.
