I would say the men are brazing or welding the swinging arms together.

well, it looks like that at first glance

but, I have never seen sparks like that come from gas welding or any welding, where the sparks come out looking like solid strings of cord or rope

but then, if it is welding of some kind, the flash looks high, and their are not wearing any dark goggles or mask

Thanks Al, It is indeed one of the the Jawa factories producing the 250/350 twinport, single but with twin exhaust ports/pipes. They could be from the 60`s as it remained the same for a few decades before moving it all to India to produce Jawa Yezdi!
The pics made me search my Dads bike library because i knew Id come across this before.

anyway, whats with the big chimney pipe coming out the back of the bench

They're gas welding, you can see the hoses going to the torch and the pipe coming out of the bench is for fume extraction. The welders are wearing dark glasses rather than goggles or a full shield but the flash from oxy-acetylene welding wouldn't give them arc eye anyway. The sparks are probably caused by the flux they're using but I've not done any gas welding since I was an apprentice and that's a long time ago :pinch:
