Just renewed my bike insurance and after a 35 minute call :S to be told its not insured at my home address at all unless its locked in the garage, previously this only applied between 10pm and 6.00am which was fair, but now I can't wash the bike or repair it on my drive or nip in to pick up my phone, go for a pee etc. However If I ride it up the drive and park it outside next doors I can do what I want!
Carole Nash is the insurers.
Anyone else queried this or found it on other policies, reccomendations on other companies etc?

Yep, had a similar chat with CN last year... Went elsewhere as the final straw was their definition of a locked garage.
I told them I used a high security, alarmed, steel shipping container for the bikes... This was not considered to be a garage or locked shed so did not meet their listed requirements!!!

To be fair to Carole Nash though, I forgot to say that they do cover you for up to £15k of damage if you're riding you're mates bike and fall off it as long as he has comprehensive cover, thats a good addition. (thumbs)

If it does get stolen from your house just tell them you'd ridden next door for a cuppa when it got stolen!

I'm with CN and mine are covered around the home, except between 2200 and 0600 hours - when they will be garaged
Only stipulation is that they must be in a locked garage between 10pm and 6am and if it isn't they increase the excess by another £100

@johnyboxer, mine was the same, only between 22.00 and 06.00 last year which I think is reasonable, but this year it's all the time, do they expect you to lock the garage everytime you nip in the house to put the kettle on???

If you're not happy about it and you renewed over the phone you should be able cancel the policy during the "cooling off" period.
Personally, if it was a good quote I would just take my chances that it doesn't get stolen while I'm washing it.And I know there are people on here who will have a hairy fit when I suggest this  but if it does get stolen just lie and say it got stolen while you were in the corner shop.Chances are they will never catch the thieves so no-one but you would know where it got stolen from.

We've got two brick built garages and one wooden workshop all of which contain bikes and if any are stolen they'll obviously have been in one of the garages.
I'd like to see an insurance company prove the bike was either on the drive, in the garden or in the workshop when I've said it was in the garage

The best thing to do would be to tell C.N. to stick their policy up their arse...if everybody did the same they would soon stop adding on these ridiculous stipulations! :pinch:
