My New (to me) Africa Twin...

Post by TomBoyNI »

I have loved these yokes since I was about 16, used to be two of them parked up near the bus stop I used coming home from school and was always suitably impressed so the opportunity presented itself last week, and yesterday I picked up this one. Only 22,000 miles on her and pretty tidy, in the interests of full disclosure I have posted up all the bad bits too, but when this summer ends the plan is to get her tidied up completely!

Rode it home and had a wee blip last night, everything seems nice and tight and responsive, hopefully there isn't anything horrendous shown on the photos but you guys, I'm sure will know infinitely more than me!

Anyway...

The good!

Looks like a fine example of the last of the @ line (thumbs)

All your "age" related paint worries can be sorted by a can of silver smoothrite paint (for the black bits, insert "black" into the last statement  ;) )

The only really expensive "weak" point on these machines is the output shaft. Remove the gear lever, un-bolt & remove the front sprocket cover and check the splines on the output shaft. Ideally you should remove the front sprocket to fully check them, as that is obviously where the weat occurs. General concensus amonst @ owners is use OE front sprocket and retainers all the time, with the correct chain tension set, and the shaft will out live you.

Pay a visit to xrv.org.uk for heaps of useful gen about the @

Many happy miles on your newly acquired classic (thumbs)

Well done on your purchase of a (or should it be 'the'?)classic big trail bike. I have a couple which are both keepers, my '02 model from new :)

Looks like a nice bike. I don't think the cosmetic issues will cause you too much trouble. (thumbs)
