If the weather is favourable, how about The Wild Atlantic Way, West Ireland. Early September should be fairly quiet, no need to book accommodation in advance, just find somewhere along the way as you go.

The Alsace Wine Route, Les Voges and Des Ballons national parks in Alsace, France. Stay in Kaysersberg.

+1 Ardennes and Luxembourg, go pay homage to the Battered Bastards of Bastogne.
Some cracking WW2 museums there

It'll rain in the Ardennes, it's nothing personal and it usually clears quite quickly but it always rains in the Ardennes.
We stop every year at the same b&b in Chimay but that's because of the racing though it's a nice little town with some horribly strong beers to sample.
