Vignette Eastern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria)

Post by Stray Dog »

Can anyone give me a decisive yes or no answer to "Do I need a Vignette"
I've done loads of searches and getting conflicting info.

I'm more or less set up for Austria and Hungary.
Don't use Motorways and it's not needed.
Please correct me if I'm wrong..

I'm travelling across country from France to Constanta Romania.
Then down to Bulgaria, and back through Slovenia, Italy, and France
Avoiding non EU Countries and ALL Motorways.

It's Romania and Bulgaria that I'm confused, and poss Slovenia.
Some sites say not needed for bikes, some say Motorways only.
Last one I checked it said a Vignette needed for ALL roads in these Countries,
bikes included

So anyone living there or travelled through recently confirm either way what is needed, and easiest place to get them (I won't have internet)

Thanks Dog

Slovenia needed a Vignette for certain bits of their Motorway (very well signposted and available at petrol stations) but it is easy to work your way around those little bits.

Here's Ali in Austria reply to a recent thread:-
Ali in Austria wrote:
Just to clarify: A vignette is only required for motorcycles in Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, Slovakia and Latvia, if you use their motorway and some express way systems. Roads that require them are well signposted.

Bulgaria and Moldova require one for vehicles used on all Public Roads as does Romania but motorcycles are exempt.

Many of the countries that require a Vignette also have additional tolls on certain roads and tunnels. Other countries not requiring any form of Vignette can still have Tolls.

http://www.tolltickets.com/country/euro ... lang=en-GB where you can buy your Vignettes but in all honesty, there is no problem getting them on your travels.

I'm going for as long as I like.... (thumbs)
I'm retired so no time restraints.
Just not sure which bike to take (Yea great to have a choice)
Tossup between comfort and convenience.

Yup I'll be filming it as much as I can.
But probably won't have internet, unless my dearly beloved loans me her tab thingy.

Hey Toni, thanks for the link, unfortunately that's what started my confusion....Nothing unusual there..
Because I also found this link:
https://touron2wheels.wordpress.com/201 ... 4-version/
This site says no Vignette needed for Bikes in RO or BG.

We've only been to Slovenia so only have experience from there. Looking at Google maps the roads labelled as A require the vignette ie A6, A7, A1 etc but other main highways labelled E do not require a vignette ie E65 etc. The E roads do lead straight on to the A roads but it's clearly signposted for miles before you get to the start so you can stop at a petrol station and work a route around. We only had an AA Road Atlas and managed fine.
I can recommend the Kranjska Gora National Park and Mount Mangart (thumbs)

Ali from Austria got it wrong with regards to motorcycles in Czech republic and Slovakia, so perhaps he made other errors.
Slovenia is a definite for motorways, Romania and Bulgaria not so.

I'm off to Romania in a couple of weeks and was not planning on buying a Vignette due to wikipedia stating that it is not required for motorcycles.
Wikipedia
It's in Wikipedia, so it must be true :silly:

I haven't checked the other countries on your itinerary.

Do what I do.

Cross any border then pull into petrol station.

Keep saying Vignette with various accents and a question mark sounding ending.

If you need one they'll sell you one, if you don't need one they'll wave the universal 'no' finger at you.

Sorted! :silly:
