Google Maps remove Classic option :-(

Mapsource and Basecamp exist for Garmin users, but the ability to drag routes about is sadly lacking

I can drag routes around in BaseCamp and Mapsource, with no problem at all. Others can, too.

I have never managed it, despite Whatton's notes on ukgser

Just a note in case anyone else is thinking of switching to a Mac instead of a pc. The wonderful and easy too use Mapsource doesn't work on a Mac :pinch:

But the wonderful and easy to use BaseCamp does (thumbs)

Just take care if you use the Hand button to pull the map about. Any routes the Hand cursor touches will be pulled around too, reshaping them.

For those that don't like the new Google maps and can't (or won't) use BaseCamp, you might like to have a look at MotoGoLoco, which is getting positive reviews.

I had a look at it a couple of years ago in its earlier incarnations and couldn't get on with it. Similarly, when I owned a Windows based PC, I had a look at Tyre, or whatever it's called and couldn't get on with that either. Both bits of software seemed clunky and the advantages of using a Google based map over a Garmin based system, limited.

Time does march on, so I thought I'd have a fresh look at MotoGoLoco's latest offering. On a Mac it does seem to now be very well put together and a big leap forward on the earlier versions I had looked at. Whilst I haven't tried to use it for any proper route planning and / or to send or run any routes to my GPS device, it seemed to make a good job of creating a dummy 800 mile route from deepest Provence to Calais. This is a journey I know well and can ride just from memory; I use it as a test run to see how well route planning software interprets my request for it to create the same route (some answers are truly bizarre) and how easy it is to modify their suggestions. The quick go I had using MotoGoLoco made a pretty good job of it.

Having now created 50 or more lengthy routes in BaseCamp, I'm pretty comfortable with how it works. I don't see any great need to change but if I find MotoGoLoco better at some things, I'll give it a go, for sure.

I've just tried MotoGoLoco on my iPad mini, using the same Provence to Calais route.

It was a bit slow, though I was downloading an HD film at the same time from iTunes Cloud storage, which (even with my non-existent IT skills) I can work out might be pushing the iPad's abilities a bit. Even so, MotoGoLoco worked and I could drag the suggested route about OK, if only slowly.

Whether this is enough to satisfy the growing army of disgruntled Googlemaps bods, I have no idea but it's maybe a start.

I installed the Chromium browser which is definitely faster for Googlemaps than Mozilla on my Linux laptop

Agreed, that using Maps with Chrome is beneficial.

I use these

The first is simpler than the second and offers a multitude of file format options for different devices and phone apps. The second is excellent for multi-day trips but has a learning curve - there are some YouTube videos to help.
