By the big dent in the left hand side I think it's been hit with something.
A lot of these ground anchors are production mig welded (high production mig).
And when under pressure to get a certain amount out per day. The heat on the welding pot goes up and travel speed goes up. There looks like there is some porosity and that may have been the main cause of the weld failure. Although looking at the right hand side the weld seems over penetrated.

It does seem to have given up quite easily by the lack of marks, probably a big jemmy bar.

Some kind of alarm is the best deterrent as the noise will always scare them off unless you live in the middle of nowhere. I have a 12g cartridge device connected to a wire, which if the door is opened so far will deafen / scare them. It's not a blank, but a non-lethal home load.

I thought about rigging a smoke canister too, the idea being that they can see nothing for a time and hopefully by the time it does clear they will have given up and gone away. Search U-tube for "Enola Gaye Wire Pull Smoke Grenade" Placed out of reach it should do the trick

Zena do zone alarms which are pretty cheap £30 disabled by a remote you just hide it in your garage. You can then add more that go off that master alarm.
