Ha! I did that last time but didn't ring the filter out enough, thought I had an oil leak!
If you're worried about that use a spray oil like this, a lot less mess as well.

Brenhden all sorts can cause a bog, usually someone has chopped open the airbox lid and not jetted it right. If this is the case an aftermarket needle (eg Dynojet) is the only way to get it running correctly. Often just a bigger main jet is put in but that screws up the top end.

Or washers are put under the needle clip to try and compensate.

worth a look anyway. You can loosen the clamps and twist the carb to see whats going on with the needle and if the slide and/or diaphragm are ok. Sometime the plastic spacer on the needle is misplaced giving a lean mixture....

If there is a big hole in the airbox you could try taping over most of it, see how it runs.

A different exhaust does not usually make too many mixture related problems on these bikes (unless someone has changed the jetting incorrectly...)

There is a *small* chance your swingarm cut-out switch is temporarily knocking out the engine under hard use/bumpy going. Also worth a look :)

Thank for all this. The airbox is fine. Maybe I will fit the exhaust and see how it runs. Its an easy swap :)

Hi Guys,

Can you swap wheels between DR650 and DR350 (both 1996?) also I'm thinking of a 19" front, any idea what types I can use?

Brenhden,

as you know the 350 uses 21 and 18" wheels whereas the 650 has a 17" rear.

the DR 650 (1996 onwards) has a different size axle on the front as well (19mm as opposed to 17mm).

A lot of American owners use the 350 wheel in their 650's as you get a wider range of tyres to use. To do that you have to use the spacers and disc on the 350 wheel and either change the chain size to 520 or use a suitable sprocket on the 350 wheel as the 650 uses a 525 chain as standard.

Why do you want to use a 19" on the front?

cheers, Bob.

I don't know the answer to this as I've never owned a DRZ but you do see manual tensioners for sale on ebay etc.

I'm sure someone with a DRZ will be along soon to answer your question better :)

There's a lot on Thumpertalk about the auto chain pensioners being rubbish and that it will fail and destroy your engine. However, I've an 07 DRZ and it's not something I have high on my list of priorities.
Perhaps if you've a high mileage engine and you're going to replace the cam chain, you might consider it, but I won't be changing mine anytime soon.
I'm sure there are better informed owners here than me, who might have different advice.

Thinking of treating my DR350 to some new rear suspension and some progressive springs. Is Hagon the place to go?
