I can say with absolute certainty that a GPS device makes as much use as a phone, as a phone does as a decent GPS.

You can buy a decent reliable secondhand GPS device (Garmin or TomTom) for really very little money. It will last you much longer than your current phone, trust me.

Look at it other way: Lose or smash your phone and you are stuffed in more ways than one. Lose or smash your GPS and you'll probably still find your way... and you'll still be able to phone a friend to tell them of your adventure!
general gps is no problem ive got a nuvi that will cover road work ..its the off road tracks that im after ..the small detail ....

some guys seem to be having a lot of succsess with smartphones as you can get very detailed maps and its very easy to see .just thinking its worth a try as the phones more or less free anyway ..i can soon stuff me old toughphone in a pannier if i break it..when i break it ...

hi guys

i notice a few guys mentioning about the sony phones...me and my girlfriend have the sony Z1 but they are not the best. we have both had problems with them and my girl friend has had hers replaced for a new one. i wouldnt recommend them.i wont be buying the new one when i replace mine. they are waterproof but the charger hole on phone seal is poor and wouldnt take the chance myself. but it is up to you.

I have used the S2,S3 and the S5. Now have a note 3 as well but not sure I want to use that , need to get a new glass front for the S5 :pinch:
All have been superb. Run google maps for road or viewranger for offroad
Did a 100+ run around the Cotswolds NYD with the S5 using VR and it was great.
Recently bought a waterproof bar mounted case for the Asus 7 so will try that
You can buy a licence for 1:50:000 full UK maps for £7.50 from VR. For use on Laptop only but larger area to plot and once saved will appear on all devices as a route

Just my views...phone via viewranger uses the same uk trail maps as garmin and same scale ...the difference is the vr maps have better zoom clarity..and a phones screen is higher resolution and bigger...no wonder older folks prefer them ..lol

Im a garmin man and wont change unless tomtom gets better maps for trails in europe as the road maps on tomtom are better..did i really say that..opps..lol..

MINKY..why not run as a test your phone and garmin with same mapping and give folks your thoughts? I KNOW your newish to trail riding with garmins...
