I can say with absolute certainty that a GPS device makes as much use as a phone, as a phone does as a decent GPS.
You can buy a decent reliable secondhand GPS device (Garmin or TomTom) for really very little money. It will last you much longer than your current phone, trust me.
Look at it other way: Lose or smash your phone and you are stuffed in more ways than one. Lose or smash your GPS and you'll probably still find your way... and you'll still be able to phone a friend to tell them of your adventure!
some guys seem to be having a lot of succsess with smartphones as you can get very detailed maps and its very easy to see .just thinking its worth a try as the phones more or less free anyway ..i can soon stuff me old toughphone in a pannier if i break it..when i break it ...
