Cranking speed?

My newish 2yr old S10 does not crank over on the button very enthusiastically. Normally I would say the battery is on it's way out however it starts so quickly on the button that the battery does'nt have a chance to die if it was going to. :huh: I push the button and get that feeling I am going to be pushing the gert beastie but it is off and running no problem. Owners is this normal or should I be investigating some more? It has had a few long runs and only on one were heated gloves in use. It is under warranty .

hi herman i had a starter problem recently ...weak turnover on a easy start engine ..it went on for a good while got weaker and then one day it appeared to pack in altogether
..it turned out that there was a bad earth in the chassis/engine to the starter ..when i earthed it properly it turns over ;ike a guddon..

you could run a thick earth from the battery to the starter chassis to see if it makes a difference . i know it sounds unlikley but thats what happened and the bike is fine starting now

Like Steve said check the earth, also worth checking all connections to the starter as it's usually the highest load so will show a bad connection early on.

Sounds like a slightly lazy starter motor,
Have a look at the earth connections on starter and battery to frame. may be well worth a clean on the battery to frame and on starter motor.
Don't do to much to it though if it's still under warranty.

I'd also add to the check the connections are good, clean and tight. I had some strange staerting problems on my R1100GS when I din't do up the earth strap tight enough

Thanks folks will have a prod at the terminals. I know the battery ones are fine as I fitted an optimate lead and the bike is fsh and super clean, or was.

My S10 does that too.Starter seems lazy but never fails to start!
Not sure if its a fault or if they are all like that?

Did you notice the problem before, or after, fitting the optimate leads?

Well before thanks. Think I will ask the Americans if its common before making myself look a tit at the dealers.

Mine is exactly the same and I actually got the dealer to look at it, he stripped and cleaned the starter cleaned all the connections and tightened them and its still exactly the same, never fails to start though.
