I've worked on Defenders and MK3's loads and to be honest they are the biggest piles of shit imaginable, very little development or modernization took place after the initial design.
Mk3's still had latch type door catches in the 80's, anti burst door catches had been a legal requirement on new designs since the early 70's, they did bring them in on the 90's though.
Sliding windows, no power, uncomfortable, many design flaws, the list goes on and on

About the only thing they have going for them is the fact you can take back/front/middle from just about any of them and put them onto a modified chassis and the panels are aluminium so they last reasonably well, but the chassis doesn't last unless it's looked after, even then I've seen them rot out in very little time.

Good for making an off road toy from and after bending/scratching every single panel you know it's not going to have a huge rusty hole in by next winter

if you buy a pile of crap then it will take time and money to turn it around but if you buy a nice one , well its quite easy keeping it nice.... i find them quite cheap to run....
would i spend £20000 on one.....NO... would i spend £8000 on one to play with just like a bike... in a heart beat, they are great toys

I've had a few of the things. They are pretty crap in some ways but pretty good in others. There is something about them that gets under your skin though..

Team Saluki was racing a Defender and I was mechanic for them together with 1 or 2 (depending on year) other people.

My partner works for land rover and the mechs say they are shite, says it all but i agree with Al they look the bollocks and would buy one over the competition, got a little tear in my eye coming over all patriotic.
