Road Racing.

Post by sprintster »

Do any of you guys on the Emerald Isle go to the road racing? I'm planning on heading over to Ireland on the 18th-19th July and pottering around the coast from Larne anti-clockwise to Cork to catch the racing at Glanmire the following weekend. Will there be camping available at the racing or will I have to find a campsite nearby? I was thinking of staying in Blarney but then I can't have a Guinness or two and the craic at the racing! :(
Any other tips on things to see, roads to ride or good campsites on the way would be greatly appreciated. (thumbs)

when leaving larne take the coast road as you have said
you could camp at cushendall (beside boat club)for the first night if it suits or travel on to portrush and portstwert which have loads of camping sites or even places to rough camp
Make sure and do the carrick-a-rede rope bridge /gaints causeway /bushmills distilary
when on the portrush area do a lap of the north west 200 course and dunluce castle go to ballymoney for a beer in joeys pub and vist the joey memorial .ducati dealers all within a stones throw of each other
You could go to magilligan take the ferry to greencastle which starts you off in donegal
travel over to donegal for the scenery. In dunfanaghy we rough camp beside the bridge with no problems tour the rest at your leisure

I would also head down to mayo and achill sound and out to keel and the beach at kim
you will love the west coast of Ireland
some others could help more than me with the south

nearer the time give me a shout and maybe me and some of the gang could meet up for a ride out

Ha you need to be more specific about 'pottering around the coast from Larne anti-clockwise to Cork'. Many people have spent years doing that, there is just so much choice and endless nice routes. I live in Cork, my last place was in Glanmire.

I will have a look at the camping. Living so close its only about 15 minutes for me. It will have very good local support. Let us know when you are nearing, a trip around Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula would be in order and might get to [strike]lead you astray[/strike] join you. Campsite at Glenbeigh on Ring of Kerry.

Also excellent camping at Westport House, excellent supermarket outside the gate.

Also excellent camping at Eagle Point at Bantry [If you take the Healy Pass [highly recommended] coming from Ring of Kerry you pass this between Glengariffe and Bantry. Some of the pitches are right on the seashore and perfect if its a calm night, if not then plenty of pitches in shelter of the trees, a decent supermarket across he road for supplies.

Wild camping in Clare, on the Burren, on the coast road [Galway to Oranmore then coast road to Kinvarra and towards Liscannor] just north of the Cliffs of Moher is a must, its between the road and the sea, get there in the afternoon with your stuff and food [no shops], its the most awesome place to camp and eat and catch the sunset. An airbed, not air mat or camping mat is preferable but its like sleeping on the moon.

Thanks guys, some good tips there.I've been over before but it's been nine years since then and that time I went clockwise from Belfast to Galway before catching the racing at Walderstown. The Beara Peninsula is what really stuck in my mind.Hopefully I'll get 11 days of unbroken sunshine like last time!
