Dr 350 problem

Post by Mat the Splat »

Hi Guys
Got a problem with my DR (97 SE model) and wondered if any one could shed some light on it. I got my DR in Jan and have put 3k miles on it so far and love it but today i pulled up at a set of lights and the motor died, tried to restart it but would fire but not keep running. I managed to get it running again by pulling the choke on and turning up the idle speed, seemed to be popping on the over run allot more than usual even with the choke off.

I managed to get it home again and started to check it over, carb seems clear, no blockages but the spark seemed really weak so i swapped the plug out for a new one and the spark is a little better but still not great, also tried the plug cap of another bike to see if it was that, checked all the connectors i could find and cleaned a few up but still not much difference.

Any ideas?

now, I am not a mechanic, but anyway

if electrical, it could be a problem with the coil, maybe bad wire connection on the coil or maybe a bad coil,

maybe a crack in plug lead or plug cap , start bike in the dark, and see do you see any electric spark jump around from the plug cap or plug lead etc

also check that your battery is fully charged, I doubt that would cause the problem, but you never know

fuel, maybe a bad fuel tap on the tank, turn it to reserve position and see does that make any difference

did you fill with fuel shortly before it happened, maybe dirty fuel

or dirty fuel filter

if the engine seems like it been smothered, check the air filter, remove air filter and start the bike, see does that make a difference

If it has a bonded rubber on metal carb manifold make sure this has not become detached.
Happens after some years and will make it run very lean as your symptons suggest.

Thanks for the replies, i tested the coil today and got a reading of 13.8 ohms which according to the manual is in the ball park of were it should be.
Gonna dive in again tonight and check all the parts suggested.
Thanks again :)
