Re: If It Ain't A Harley...
Had a 2003 Electra Glide from new and in the 11 years I had it, it never let me down once. Took me all over Europe many times and I even rented one in the States for a couple of weeks. I rode in all conditions, from snow in the Alps to 125F in Death Valley, but all the time I looked damn cool and could not have been more comfortable. However, there was always something missing. It wasn't until I got myself a second bike, a 955i Tiger, that I realised what it was. Fun! Took the Tiger across Europe a couple of times, especially up into the mountains, and I was a changed man. Sold the Harley, cut my hair and even had a shave. Went into the Triumph dealer and got myself the new 1200 Explorer. Just finished running it in, and wait, what's this? A recall notice! Needs a new brain transplant! I do hope I've done the right thing?

Well, I guess I'm really lucky. I have a Harley Road King and a Honda Varadero. In My opinion the best of both worlds. They are chalk and cheese, The Honda is reasonably quick, Handles well enough, good all rounder, reliable comfortable,(Toured Europe on it) , will go off piste( not with me on it mind!) and can leave it most places without being mithered or worrying about it being molested.
The Harley is , hard to explain to people who don't have one. Its not quick, it is slow handling, expensive to buy and on paper, crap......but...Its how it feels and how it makes me feel. I don't want to go fast on it, Its still fun and engaging at lower speeds, its comfortable , feels solid, engine shakes about, mechanically loud, sounds like thunder , feels alive but smooths out lovely when riding. It looks stunning, to me anyway, Its pretty easy to maintain , run and in my case reliable. Nothing has gone wrong in nearly 5 years, still looks like new at 20,000 miles. ( so does my Vara mind) Unique to any other motorcycle is the fact that if there is anything at all and I mean anything you don't like about it you can change it for any number of options. you can make it exactly as you want it. For the most part you can do it yourself. They are actually built to last, every connector on the wiring loom is replaceable, you can even take individual wires out of the block connectors and replace them , engines can be stripped and modded in any number of ways and most things are made of steel and alloy. When you get very high milage on it and don't want to refurbish it yourself the factory will even recon the motor to new spec , at a price mind, they will do this even for older evolution engines. The long model runs means plenty of parts, accessories and specialist knowledge about too.
Well I'm rabbiting on . I've had a good many bikes over the years but can't think of anything I would change these two for, there are other bikes I would have as well mind ,( won't happen), but I guess its a rare thing to find the two adventure bikes you are totally content with. Are Harleys adventure bikes? Well I wouldn't be surprised to find that there are more people that have had and are still having adventures on Harleys around the world than any other one make of motorcycle.

You could say exactly that about my Land Roverhard to explain to people who don't have one. Its not quick, it is slow handling, expensive to buy and on paper, crap......but...Its how it feels and how it makes me feel. I tried a Harley Fat Boy recently and loved it although I wouldnt want it as my only bike.
