Overtaking inside double white lines - allowable?
Overtaking inside double white lines - allowable?
Whilst out for a tootle about today I was behind a car doing 50mph on an A road and on a long sweeper with double white lines and with lanes wide enough to pass I was tempted to pass but didn't (nothing coming the other way) and wouldn't have crossed the double whites, would this have been illegal assuming I stayed below 60mph??

Unless there a specific signs for No Overtaking , then it would be lawful as the offence ios to cross or straddle the white line nearest to you...however, if you end up passing too close and cause the other driver to swerve etc, then its possible that you could get caught for driving without due care and attention... definitely something to do carefully and only when its clear and obvious that the car being overtaken knows that you are there....

At the other extreme, you can cross the white line when safe to do so, but only to overtake anything traveling at less than ten miles per hour.

I'd have just passed it anyway. What are the chances of the car behind being an unmarked police car? And if you pass safely and don't piss anyone off who's going to bother reporting you?

I thinbk that only applies to Road maintenance vehicles....
You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

I do it all the time but ALWAYS give a friendly wave as I do so. Seems to work a treat and many motorists pull in to allow my passage as I approach from behind them.

Cheers chaps, that was what I thought but wasn't in any rush, it is wide enough so next time if I need to I will.

Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

Answer is very simple. YES. Highway code rule 165 as long as you don't cross or straddle the line. Question raised when I did my RoSPA test. Noooooooo problems. Ride safely
