In the scouts we used to use candle wax, on zipps although would of thought only a minor amount of the wx would of got into the zipper, due to wax being brittle when hard.

Have you checked to see if any material didn't cant get cought in the runner ofthe zipper?

I would now days suggest something like ACF 50, WD40 or 3 in 1 oil, or a light oil worst case senario olive oil, yor just lubrecating it really.
I would advese aganst anything like vasaline as being st sticky mud & dirt could get coulht while packing away & get particals stuck in the zipper.
