Yes but no. It's a hard choice but I had a XT500 and it was terrible on the road. I've still got the R80G/S and it's a good all rounder - which, is probably what an 'adventure' bike is all about

I think BMW were the first to mass produce a big bore off roader, which was subsequently aligned with the Adventure market.
The XT 500 was a large Trailie, marketed along side Yamahas XT and DT ranges, great bit of kit, and still ruggedly handsome.

.the yam xt great i remeber one of my pals had one. and could do 50yd wheeless the dogs cheers al,ps did it have only kick start . with a decom lever

Yes as far as I remember that's correct, ditto the TT and 550's?

Yup, all the XT's were kickstart only, up until the Tenere was released when they were available with kickstart and button. I still have my XT500 (in fact it's just recently undergone a rebuild).

Used it to ride from Cape Town to London many, many moons ago. Kick starting it was an art-form, but once you knew what you were doing was easy.

I remember coming back to my bike, which I'd parked in the middle of Nairobi to find it lying on it's side with the ignition all mangled. In the nearest doorway, nursing his ankle, was the twit who'd thought he could steal my bike and then been bitten by kickback from the compression! :laugh:
