Who wants to race in UK rallies (Hafren/Cambrian etc) and doesn't? can't? won't?

Anything goes, and mine's a Guinness.

Pity it's so expensive - I didn't realise entry fees were over £100

Is it the cost of hiring the land that makes it so expensive ?

can't speak for the Hafren/Cambrian rallies, but was involved with other rallies organisation - such events are very specialised and tailored for specific needs, specific event = very specific and scarce attendance. But imho that is an advantage, not disadvantage. Crowds are not always a good thing.
Plus when you add all the expenses with saving as much as you can, it still adds up. Also, don't forget everyone's favourite insurance and other bureaucracy which just chews up time and budget.

then we can maybe address these issues :)

Did 2 rallies last year, Sprint and Kielder. Only reason I dont/havent done more is down to time and cost. Id rather commit to an entire season that enter 1 or 2. And to do this would cost a lot and would take up a lot of weekends...its always a battle to find a fine balance between riding and family life. Plus I dont have a big bike anymore (yes I now the categories but for me the thrill is riding this kind of event of a big bike). Just my opinion.

There are a number of reasons. Each event is organised by a club. The rental to the forestry commission can be up £15,000, then you have all the personnel involved and the timing guys (usually a seperate firm paid to deal with that side of it). You have rental of a farmers field, marketing, number printing, ACU and MSA permits, all manner of expenses. Some clubs give free food on the saturday night (Ryedale was an excellent curry with a number of different dishes) and or vouchers to use at the caterer present etc

When you put it in the context of being able to ride pretty much all day for two days (usually they are 2 day events), no gates, no oncoming traffic, no walkers, horses, mountain bikers or other users, and you can ride at speed on the specials (if you want) and have a great laugh at the same time, I think it's actually pretty good value. At Kielder for example you do two laps, 80 miles per lap, all offroad bar about 3 miles of tarmac.

Interesting - thanks Mike for the informative reply

I'll stick to Trials, I think :)

I can ride every week if I want on a Sat & Sun for £10-£12 per event & venues are all pretty local

having been involved in other sporting events I think Mike is right, the amount of money it takes to put an event on can make your eyes water and then you hope people turn up and pay.

£100 for a dirty weekend

cheers Spud ;)
