You could do worse than take a look at the TRF (Trail Riders Federation).

Most areas organise runs and are keen to encourage new riders http://www.trf.org.uk/ some of the runs can be described as two wheeled pony trekking - so just the job if you like to look about, when out in the country, on the roads less travelled.

There is a West Yorks group who meet in Bradford.
