Re: Bicycles - I quite like them
Got my dads 1970 21 speed drop first of the light weight trioval frames replaced 1 wheel and tyres and brake blocks bit scary at sppeeed downhill due to lack of braking.
Also got a £10 10speed peugot racer 1980 vintage i use in winter 1 new wheel in 2 years (pot holes are incredible this year) .
Dont need to spend hundreds check second had shops free ads ect get one cheap take it to a decent cycle shop spend 50 to 100 pounds having serviced and sorted ride it dont worry.
My cycles live outdoors as do my bikes under a cover.

Re: Bicycles - I quite like them
Well I went to a few cycle shops today and decided to go for a Decathlon own brand B'Twin NeWork 5. It had all the bits that I wanted and felt good riding around the store.
However, they only had one in stock and it had been reserved, and no indication on when they might get more in. I was advised that it might be quicker to buy online so I came home and spent a while registering a new account and setting up my Decathlon Card. Went to buy the bike but the system wouldn't let me. Eventually gave up. Waste of time that was.
Going out now for a better experience on my Transalp B)

Re: Bicycles - I quite like them
once you get a better idea of what you want check out ebay for bikes two or three years old, cyclists are absolute fashion bitches and must have this years colour/gimmick/gears/brakes etc.
You can't sell nearly new bikes for anything like you would expect them to be worth so there are bargains to be had.
I would also recommend Boardman bikes from Halfords, they do look very well made and specified. Also some of their own brand bikes (Carrera IIRC) are worth looking at.
Although I would also recommend getting advice from a decent local bike shop and no they won't fob you off with whatever they are trying to shift, most shop owners I know are enthusiasts first and businessmen second.
You can do worse than ask if they have any 2012 bikes left, I bought a 2004 Specialized back in 2005 and got it reduced from £1900 to under £1300.
It's still going strong so you can tell I'm not a fashion bitch.
On a little jaunt in the Lake District the other year....

Had a ride on the Carrera Crossfire at Halfrauds today.... I was pretty impressed with it for the cheap price of £250. Plus they are doing £20 off that if you order it online.
Re: Bicycles - I quite like them
I always find it odd that they give you a discount if you order online compared to the price they'll offer the item to you when you're stood in the shop waving money at them. I've used my phone to order something for collection while I've been standing next to the store manager and he's just shrugged his shoulders and told me to do it because he can't match the price they're offering online.Zookman wrote:Had a ride on the Carrera Crossfire at Halfrauds today.... Re: Bicycles - I quite like them
I bought a decathlon b-twin thingy out here in Palma for 130 Euros
bargain thought that would do for the summer, then after a couple of beers went to impress the missus with a cool skid and forgot the brakes on european bikes were the other way round.......turned the wheel, grabbed a handful of FRONT brake and promptly parted company with the bike through the front door
   I did find out that the wheels were made of cheese though and needed a new back rim .
I do have a raleigh record sprint at home though retro and great.
I was fine, thanks for your concern

Re: Bicycles - I quite like them
I'm a bit surprised that you admit to needing a new back rim but let's leave it at that and there's no need for you to say which part of the bike did the damage :pinch:Andy A wrote:I bought a decathlon b-twin thingy out here in Palma for 130 Eurosbargain thought that would do for the summer, then after a couple of beers went to impress the missus with a cool skid and forgot the brakes on european bikes were the other way round.......turned the wheel, grabbed a handful of FRONT brake and promptly parted company with the bike through the front door

I know its bloody stupid..... even more odd that you don't even pay for it on Halfords site. You just click & collect and pay for it when you pick it up, you still get the £20 discount.AndyB wrote:I always find it odd that they give you a discount if you order online compared to the price they'll offer the item to you when you're stood in the shop waving money at them. Apparently, best place to buy push bikes is from a lost / stolen Police Auction.
Loads of them all going cheap; set aside a few quid for a service and off you pop.
Check out Wilsons Auctions website (Never been to one, but friends have).
