TENER LADY

Post by PHILinFRANCE »

Well thats what our lass has christened her !!!

Took her out to Rocamadour and beond for a run the other day with a couple of mates Andy 650Dakar and Dave DR650

Got to admit for the first 30kms to Rockie the Tener felt BIG, UGLY and WRONG and not a patch on my DR650 !!!!

After 190km run i'd settled right into the Tener and loved it ..............i'll keep the DR though ;)

Couple of Q.s for all you Tener guys out there

1 Whats the standard front sprocket size ?
2 At 130kph (80 mph) is 5000rpm ok ?

Oh and ond getting home found the suspension was crancked right up !!! must of been a fat barstward or carried a pillion a lot

Cheers all and Merry Xmas

Hi, for off roading a smaller front makes a big difference,, soften the rear shox and let some air out ur tyres. Biggest
Flaw off road is the rear shox, something like Hyper-Pro should make a big difference. Andy

Hi Phil, congrats on the tenere, health to use!

standard it's a 15 front sprox, yep some change to a 14 for offroad, personally mine is left standard, you know it works for me

It does not change the speedo what ever ratio you use as the drive head is on the gearbox and not the wheel, so ratio changes may effect the lets say true speed/ road speed, it will not be reflected on the speedo, unless a speedo healer or gps is used.

the suspension can need attention, many fit an hyperpro or ohlins spring to the rear with good effect, although the damping can be overwhelmed on fast offroad, mine has a race spec Nitron shock fitted to good effect i may add.
i had WP forks from a ktm for doing the heroeslegend rally though refitted the standard forks for normal use, By with using a heavier oil, mine has atf in they work pretty well. if rallying was on the cards, yep the ktm forks and wheel would be back in a jiffy.

I just wont be doing this kind of thing in the standard trim!. anyhow, get onto xt660.com as tons of xt stuff there. i should be down later in the year. all the best to you and yours!

All that being said i've spec,ed my DR650 up sumit crule and love it for the really mucky stuff , taken her to Maroc twice and plan on doing a load of rough stuff in the Pyrennes on her !!

The Tener on the other hand as it still shinie will start off on the likes of fire roads !!!!! but time will tell  Already got the snorkel off

When you down our way ? is it for another of Charles's do's ? i don't want to miss that again this year.

Good luck with the heroslegend rally mate and ill sign into xt 660.com tonight

Cheers again mate and hopefully catch up soon

The ten is a weird one isnt it. Im personally finding mine awesome but it does have some strange handling now and again. It does feel weirdly front end heavy in some turns and top heavy, especially compared to my old 660 ten and transalps. Having said that there isnt any of the new breed that i feel can do all the tenere copes with it really is worthy of its leatherman tag.
Gearing is spot on at 15 45 for road and if i find it troublesome off road i would go up 2 on the rear Im guessing to be better and still give a decent road speed.
Hope you love it Phil

2 up on the rear may require a longer chain. For long trips, you could take a 14T with you and swap when you get to the off road bit and swap back for the trip back home. It is not a difficult job provided you have a big enough socket with you.

I do wonder about doing that, it was something i always did on my Hondas, especially my XRs, but it was so simple. I could loosen the chain undo sprocket bolts and get it all back up an running in less than 5/6 mins. All the bikes that have a single front sprocket nut like DRZ KTM and the Ten, Ive never trusted doing it oin the trail

Yep new bike new lessons or at least a learning curve !!! Already thought about the 14 tooth for the trails , its what i do on the DR650.
Reason i asked about front sprocket size is i don't know if the last guy had changed it.
Did a little mod last night after looking at after market bits , OFF THE ROAD do a intake for the air without the snorkel at around €35 so being a tight arse i pulled the original apart added a rubber spacer on the base for tuppence  and works a treat
