Hi, I have worn out a Zumo 550 (5 years on the road) which Garmin declined to fix and replaced with a 660 for the repair price. My only comment is that you should look at the mapping that is available for the area you want to go. When we went to Morocco and Tunisia, there was no GPS mapping for these countries. Nor was there mapping for Russia, Mongolia etc. The Tom Tom used only Tom Tom mapping. Garmin will acccept 3rd party mapping. I got digitised survey toppo maps from a mob in Sth Africa for Morocco ect and a guy in Norway provided some digitised Survey Toppo maps for the Russian east. These worked fine in that they showed the map sheet and a vehicle marker which was at least a start.

So, my point is that the mapping is real issue if you intend to go outside W Europe, North America, Australia, Japan etc. If there is no mapping, the device is about as useful as a hip pocket in a singlet.

Regards, Mike Hannan

Thanks Mike, to be honest what I want is western europe in what I refer to as "road mode" and the uk in an OS format if that makes sense, but all in one unit.

I bought a Zumo 660 and a Satmap Active 10 .... horses for courses!

Both brilliant at their job but neither can multi task.

I'm starting to think an I-Phone with the right apps will do the trick(not that I have one) say either Garmin or TomTom western europe and a Memory map type app?? Does anyone have that set up, if so what waterproof case?

My mate has UK OS mapping on his Garmin Oregon.
As I recall he has the standard crap Garmin maps stored in the device storage & the OS map on an SD card.
Runs a bit crap compared to my Satmap, but he seems happy with it.

I use an iphone 4 with memory map.
It is mounted in a waterproof handlebar mount from ebay costing £20 ish and has worked well through the pyrenees, uk and recent trip around europe. Stable off road and has an opening for charging. Only problem thus far was overheating on sunny days whilst charging caused the phone to shut off for a while.
Touch screen wont work with thick gloves through case either.
I upload gpx fies created on my laptop or downloaded and email them to myself. Open in the phone as memory map file and works a treat.
For satnav i have been using google maps and after recent ios update apple maps. They work ok but require internet. There are apps with preloaded maps though which you ave to pay for.

Thanks Apache, I wouldnt mind paying for an app if you end up with a machine that does it all.

hi there GB

Ive got a old RoadAngel Adventure 7000 and that does road guidance (Full Europe) and OS mapping down to 1:25 It tracks route in OS mode giving full profile of route.

I know its a bit old hat now (not made anymore and not super slick) but as far as I can see it does everything you want in one device.

Might be a device to play with if you find one on fleabay

I have one of them Mawse, and used it when the TT went skywards and have used it off road a fair bit, but like you said its a bit old hat, doesnt use bluetooth and MMap won't run on Mac, but I'm sticking with it for now.
