Garmin Zumo 660 Map update 2013.30

Post by RoadTrekker »

Just had a right mare of a job updating my maps(onto Zumo 660) to the new 2013.30 verson from Lifetime Maps Update.

1. Do a backup of your Zumo files and directories onto a PC just in case at least you can do a restore if there is a problem
2.I tried 3 times to download and save the the new update selecting save to Zumo 660 and Mac. Everytime it crashed so I reloaded again same thing.
3. Checked what maps are loaded in Mapsource and it showed only the old maps no new map.
4.So tried saving only to the MAC where the program just froze doing nothing.

Getting really pissed off now!

5.Existed all the programs and the download, disconnected the Zumo and restarted it and waited for 5 mins, then selected Maps on the Zumo, all of a sudden the Zumo flashed a message saying updating maps. After 5 mins it said update is finished.

6.Then selected MAPS on the Zumo, then select More Info at the bottom and it showed the list of loaded maps, THERE IT WAS 2013.30 all loaded.

7.Next I reconnected the Zumo to my MAC and selected Mapsource let it load up and read the maps this takes about 5 mins. This is when your PC will now copy the map from the Zumo and save it to the Mapsource program. To check just go to MAPS on the Mapsource menue bar and see what maps are loaded it should show the map

8.All done just doing another backup to save the whole Zumo database onto my HD just in case

So the point is if you are having problems with loading maps complete the download and then disconnect and then restart your Zumo as it only now that it will complete the full upgrade. Interesting that it also made some spare storeage space available, strange.

Good luck

So now when you are lost you can blame the updated version :cheer: ..it really would be nice of Garmin to be able to update just the new stuff..but then again its just a huge image file..

so where you going then...at least a few roads not traveled before...

and no I'm not being funny before anyone takes it the wrong way..just tong in cheek..

I have lifetime updates for my 660 and 550, I get alerts when they are due. I follow the instructions for the upload which includes, disconnect and let them upload then reconnect to complete.

However, I am finding that I cannot get full coverage as its saying not enough space available.

I emailed Garmin and I had an answer the next day which stated as, the years pass the map detail grows and exceeds the memory on the zumo.

It helps to delete files from the zumo like music, unused languages etc to free up more memory.

It's worth visiting the gamin help section on their website and asking the questions, they reply fully and in laymans terms very quickly.

I've been using mine for 3 years and they've never let me down and have helped to guide me to many places.

by removing all languages except for your one plus all the help files you can load all the latest mapping.

but it is true that the increase of the poi's on the new maps has caused a problem.

still a good bit of kit tho!!!

In addition to the above I've just found the e-mail reply from Garmin that you may find useful:

Dear ...........,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I am happy to help you with this. As the map updates have got larger it
means it will require more space on the device. You can select a smaller
region, purchase an SD card or you can delete Voice files, Text files,
Help files, Vehicle icons, and JPEG picture files from your automotive
Garmin unit to free up some space in the unit's internal memory:

Connect your device to your computer with the USB cable.
Open the My Computer / Computer icon from your Desktop or the Start
menu. (Mac users can skip this step.)
Right-click on the Garmin drive shown in Devices with Removable Storage.
(Mac users can find the Garmin drive mounted on the Desktop.)
Click Open.
Double-click on the Garmin folder (Note: Some units do not require this
step.)
Double-click on the Voice, Text, Help, Vehicle, or JPEG folder.
Click on the file you would like to delete. Please delete all languages
that you do not use.
Press the Delete key on your computer keyboard. (Mac users need to drag
the file to the Trash and then empty the Trash).
You may be prompted to confirm that you want to delete the file.
Select Yes to confirm.

Note: Please keep the files that you will need. For example, if you use
the American English voice files, be sure to keep the files that are
named American English.

After deleting some of the Voice, Text, Help, Vehicle, and JPEG picture
files, you will now have more room available on your automotive GPS
unit. If you have any MP3 files such as Music, please delete those.
