The Mighty Varadero gets around 50mpg which is good for a galaxian cruiser like the Varadero!

Must say that surprised me: I've only ever previously found stories of pretty abyssmal from the Vara, whenever I've looked on the net. Reminiscent of the Firestorm's typical 35 mpg!

I think that's the older carb version that's not so good on fuel.

Ah, but are you quoting US mpg to Appleby's UK mpg? If so then you may be closer to his result than you thought...

Oooops ! You're right, I indicated US Gal. So my scooter (1200GS) does best case scenario 50.4 Miles/Imperial Gallon :whistle:.

YBR125s are good bikes but I bought this one to get me the 72 mile round trip to uni when I was studying as my RXS100 was constantly being naughty at the time (now "fixed" and much better behaved). It was brilliant for that as the route was mainly back roads, no limits over 60mph. It would be perfectly good as an adventure bike, as your link proves, but not so good for me at the moment as its now my stand-in bike just in case the bandit breaks and I'd really rather have something I can take off-road properly again. At the moment the YBR is just sitting in the garage as the bandit is now so well behaved. Although I'd be happier with another DR-Z400 or an XR250/400/650 I'd definitely not shy away from a 125. I noticed the XT125R has the same engine as the YBR so maybe gives just as good mpg. My DR-Z would do just over 50 mpg if I remember rightly.

The carb varadero gives me 40 mpg no matter how I ride it.
The injection version (03) onwards is more like 50'mpg

My drz 400 gave me 50mpg
Varadero 125 gave me 75 mpg
Africa twin around 50

Not that bad though really, given that the Vara is a "big boned bird" of a bike :laugh:

I'm onto my second carb fed Vara. The 1st one - a '99 model, averaged 46mpg over the 6k miles that I did on it (4.5k fully loaded whilst wandering through France & Spain).
My current '02 model has averaged 46 mpg over the 11.5k miles that Ive covered on it.

Worst I've seen from either was 38mpg whilst floggin the bits off the 1st one when hauling up from South Wales to home - 545 miles in under 10hrs.
The best I've seen is 53mpg - twice whilst cruising in Spain on number 1 Vara, once whilst cruising some Highland roads on me tod.

I ride with AfricaJim a bit during the better weather months, and on average , over a tankful (which is about 210 before reserve light pops on), his injected machine drinks about 1lt less than my carbed machine.

Overall I find the machine to be a great compromise, what with it's 80-90bhp and it is average thirst for fuel - and a worthwhile compromise that I find very enjoyable when ever I climb aboard

So, after the sales pitch, who wants to buy my economical '02 Vara, so's I can relieve a man of his '10 plated machine that's only got 1900 miles on it?

I love my RXS, never going to sell it. I think it might actually be immortal. At the moment it is teaching me about mechanics and I am repaying it by turning it into a lovely flat tracker. :laugh:

Faster and more fun to ride than my YBR too. The lights are shocking though! :S

Must say I'm very surprised by some of your figures!
Had about a dozen big Jap fours for the last 20 years, and mid - late 30s is all I ever got.

The thirstiest bike I ever had was in 86 when a fresh faced Dave Appleby signed his life away for a Freddy Spencer replica Honda NS400 2 stroke triple.
This bike would sup the motion lotion at a rate of 20 to the gallon.
But this is only half the story, it would use 1 litre of synthetic 2 stroke oil every tank of fuel (and it didn't hold much) which according to MCN gave it a real world figure of 12 to the gallon.

Best I ever got was predictably on my beloved Honda SS50 (60 downhill) which held a quids worth & lasted all week.

Usually get 60mpg+ from the Tenere, as long as I keep it around the 60mph mark. Makes for a good touring range as it's got a 22 lire tank.

Rag her though, and she's a lush – big singles don't like big revs

Anyway, to my point! 227 miles covered on 19.93 litres works out at 51.78 mpg.
I think that is pretty dammed good for a 1200 boxer twin with a fat bloke on board.

Can anyone beat this?

Hell no :blink: ! I'm lucky if I reach 42 mpg with my '09 1200GS

43.5 no matter how i ride my 10 gsa but dont care i love it
