This actually more like it - on the 800GS Peak Torque is avaialble from around 4.5 to 7k

Not kicking in at 9k

If you want a bike for just road work , yeah but I know a few places where having it woud see you seeing earth sky earth sky...

We have all been riding a fair few years, see one of my previous posts. With work and pleasure i have racked up well over a million miles, not saying this to wave my willy, just letting you know you don't have to have ridden a bloody bike for thirty years to know what you are talking about, nor do you need to know a few blokes who own a bike shop!!

I ride in the London Met for a living and have lost count of the number of "blokes" in a bike shop who i have shared a coffee and cig with!!!

All i am saying is get behind them instead of trashing anything thats not a BM
What ??? Geta grip mate, I am happy to say what I feel about a huge number of marques including BMW.

I am also not paid to ride what my old mate who just retired from the job in that there London used to occasionally call the Fluro turd.

If you are Met, you should know who I mean ;) No names here. PM if you are interested in who ;)

Naw mate I was in the office with the gaffers usually getting sponsorship sorted and being allowed to play on some of the new toys still with dealer plates on. ;)

I quite happliy will air my opinions on what doesn't take my fancy on anything. To me this bike is a bit of a disappointment so far, initially it looked great , then it has lost it's appeal. It;s all part of the great scheme of thigs, abit of debate... it's still not a WASP Police state .. yet :D

The torque curve on both bikes are virtually the same?

The place I think the Triumph will fail compared to the BMW, is weight distribution. The tank is high and the gearbox is also high. So although the two bikes are very similar in actual weight, the Triumph will feel heavier.

Where are you seeing the torque "kicking in at 9k"? You should be looking at the red line which shows the maximum at 7800 (triumph's figure) and the spread showing around 85% of maximum from 2K to 9.5K. That to me is showing a very good engine. I would hazard a guess that it's a flatter, straighter line than a 1200GS albeit the numbers are not as big. But the Tiger is only an 800cc.

On the torque issue, I came off my 2000 XRV 750 RD07A and jumped on to Shirlaws 955i Tiger many yrs ago, the salesman (Donald) said "I've owned both bikes and I know if you take out my Tiger for a test you'll buy it today!"
After an hour and a 30 mile test, urban and country, I got off the bike and told Donald "sorry mate, it's half the bike the Africa twin is" and rode off.
I did eventually buy a Tiger to replace my 51 plate Varadero. Agree there's ample torque at lower revs for touring and tootling, but wind that puppy up and,,,, DAMN!
Moral of the story? Triumph makes a damned fine bike, you can ride it sedately and it's a peach, ride it hard and the pegs spark on the deck through corners and it can make your eyes water with your visor down with a bit of a wind up!
Horses for courses, this Arab stallion of a Tiger will take a bit of getting used to but oh the fun!

Without cocking a leg over I can't comment on the balance, but the dry weight of the Triumph is nearly a stone heavier than the F800 and it will weigh a few pounds more with the extra fuel.

BM do have the mass centralisation thing sorted, the F650GS single feels a feather weight even with a full tank... PITA though if you need to get into the electrics as the battery is in line with the engine under the false tank.Electric junction box is kept nice and dry UNDER the battery compartment.

Okay - the torquee I was looking at was for the Street Triple.. but the high revving engine style doesn't float my boat so the peak torque kicking in at 6k-9k is still more like a stroker than I personally would like.

BTW hat is an 800 GS dyno chart according to all the links I followed to the same place ;)

Considering I rode Honda CR's, Maico 490's and 500's offroad, the thought of something with the go of a stroker appeals to me! I rode my 955i Tiger up and down the Stella like a 2 stroke crosser and enjoyed myself immensely!
Like I said, horses for courses.
Can't wait to give it a whirl!

You need to ride more bikes... a Mk1 Fireblade or MK1 R1 or any Gixxer Thou is an Arab Stallion, the pre 1050 Tigers , if we keep to the equine references are reliable hacks to ride to hounds, will trot along quietly but can show a clean set of heels cross country.

An AT, and many of the other big trailie bikes that came from that magical period in the early 80's to mid 90's when manufacturers made bikes that people actually found useable and not just fashionable like my tatty old 1100GS , a reliable old mule, carrys stuff and people and is tough as old boots, and can out run trouble when required, or get you to a ferry on time or just to work with a grin on your face.
